“Flamboyán: A Reclamation” is a reimagining of Brisca, a traditional card game played in Puerto Rico. Brisca is a byproduct of Puerto Rico’s colonization by Spain, and the name “Flamboyán” is a direct protest against it. The Flamboyán tree is incredibly important to Puerto Rico, it serves as a symbol of the resilience and spirit of the Puerto Rican people. Alongside a culturally relevant brand identity, the traditional playing card suits have been replaced with significant Puerto Rican motifs, highlighting the island’s rich culture. Flamboyán is a love letter to my heritage and a protest against the centuries of colonization that the island has endured.
